On one end of the spectrum, we have the first image. On the other, we have the second.

I thereby posit that everyone behind PSA campaigns is a fucking idiot.

Sorry, but I fail to see the problem with the second one. If a person knowingly consumes alcohol (or other stuff to decrease their inhibitions) and then engages in behavior they otherwise would not have, that is entirely their own “fault”. They consented.

I’m not talking about that they are black out drunk (and therefore legally unable to consent) and taken advantage off or were unknowingly drugged, those are clearly crimes and should be treated as such (and already are in pretty much all of the civilized world). But getting wasted and hooking up with some stranger (who might be equally drunk) only to regret it the next day is no one’s fault but the person making the decision to get that drunk. Cautioning people of this, especially young people that have little experience with alcohol and don’t yet know their limits, seems like a good idea.

I wouldn’t say it’s their “fault.” As this shifts responsibility away from the party knowingly taking advantage. But in any case, the nuances are completely removed from the posted. Which essentially just communicates “it’s your own damn fault for getting so drunk.” And given that this is a poster about binge drinking, it can easily be read as “it’s your own fault for getting black-out drunk.”

By analogy, if you are walking down a dark alley in a high crime neighborhood at night and you get mugged, yes, it was stupid of you to do that. But the person at fault for the mugging is ultimately the person who mugged you. As your walking down a dark alley harms no one, whereas the same is not true of their mugging you.

WTF is with PSAs? Also, while the second one clearly sucks, the double standard in the first one is TOO FUCKING REAL. How could anyone with a brain bigger than a pebble design #1 without, at any point, saying “this shit’s fucked up”?

Reblog if you started worrying about the way you look before you were even 16.

I was about 8 I think

Fucking 7 years old.

I was six when my family started telling me I need to eat less because i won’t be pretty and no one will marry me. Also my dance teacher used to scream at me in front of 50 other dancers to suck in my stomach and start exercising outside of rehearsals.

like 6 or 7 I think ?? when I moved into a Pennsylvanian township full of rich republicans who’s daughters all had pretty long hair (compared to my short neck length choppy hair) and didn’t have double chins either

at 11 my mom and sister started to tell me I didn’t have boobs and that I had a flat ass … now I hate my body and think I’m flat

I was in weight watchers at 11.

Not sure exactly, but definitely by the time fourth grade rolled around. So I was probably 8.

My mum put me on a diet when I was 8. FYI, I went through puberty age 9 soooo it was probably the beginning of that.

I was 7.

I was 8 or 9 when my classmates were ragging on me for wearing sweatpants instead of jeans.

Spending the year where puberty really starts to happen in a foreign country, where all your classmates exhibit essentially the same phenotype, which is much closer to conventional beauty standards than you are, and also all have an actual clothing budget, is, uh, not going to do positive things for body image.

But I’ve been angsting about my height since pretty much forever. I remember when I was still in elementary school and there was some article about growth hormones for short kids I was very interested.

3 but dysphoria so you can’t really blame the surroundings for that - except to the extent that I was upset my dad wouldn’t let me have long hair.

Will you and John Green really be racing at Nerdcon? If so how do you suppose it will play out?

Dear skylarscharrer,

It is true that fishingboatproceeds challenged me to a public drag race at NerdCon in Minneapolis in October. He has procured a Tesla for this purpose, which is not, as you might think, a peculiar dead genius but rather a very speedy electric car. Very speedy.

I have selected the speediest of my cars for this purpose, my Evo, which is not, as you might think, Extra Virgin Olives, but rather an all-wheel drive Mitsubishi.

It is speedier than my Datsun merely by virtue of actually running and it is speedier than my Camaro through a series of modifications already performed on its willing body, but here is the thing: John Green’s Tesla is both electric and an automatic. All he has to do is put his foot to the floor, and immediately his car will roar hiss to crazy speed. My car is gas and a manual, which means I will have to run it through the gears to hit my top speed. Also, John Green said he was thinking of getting a Secret Special Tesla for the event, which I think we all agree is cheating. Although I have many hours logged on race tracks and in rally, which is perhaps also cheating.

In any case, I have taken the liberty of setting up a complete engine swap and rebuild to put in 300 or 400 more horsepower over the next two months. It’s going to be a beast, unless it explodes.

His car may yet be faster off the line, but my car has a higher top speed already and I have no discernible sense of fear.

How will it play out? I don’t know, but at the very least it should be entertaining for the spectators.

urs,

Stiefvater

When Maggie says she has “no discernible sense of fear,” she is speaking literally. I have never been able to discern any fear in her.

I, on the other hand, am essentially a human-shaped fear container. So if I were betting, I’d bet on her.

You’re a human-shaped fear container with a pizza for a face? The world is an amazing place.

Christian evangelist and social media personality Joshua Feuerstein is taking aim at marriage equality — literally. Feuerstein ended a recent video rant posted to his Facebook page by holding up a semiautomatic assault rifle and encouraging his followers to fight for their “First Amendment right to refuse” recognition of marriage equality with their Second Amendment right.
As for me, this jackass is doing a fine job of “painting Christians” in a negative light far beyond what any LGBT group ever could. He really should be arrested for domestic terrorist threats. Do you agree, friends? What’s your thoughts on this?

He’s a jackass and I have no idea HOW he intends to use guns to stop people from getting married.

HOWEVER, I disagree with you about arresting him for domestic terror threats. Arresting people for saying things you disagree with is Bad.

Arresting people for saying things you disagree with is bad, yes. But what about arresting people for threatening to murder others and making it clear that they have the means to follow through on that threat? And when they are inciting others to violence, and it is clear that those others also have the means to follow through? Is that still bad? The precedent set by the courts in the US would seem to say no; your right to free speech is not protected when you present a clear and present danger.

He is not a clear and present danger. He is an idiot. Less than 1% of all violent rants are followed through on. See: SJW on Tumblr ranting about killing all men.

A clear and present danger requires that the threat be personalised. He has not named any person or organisation he intends to attack. He has not sent a threat directly to any person or organisation. He’s talking trash on the internet.

Many people rant in ways that could be thought of as “inciting others to violence”. How many lead to violence? A mob which has already assembled can easily be converted into a riot. A random assortment of Facebook friends? Unlikely. In the event that one of the people who saw that video goes and shoots someone, it’s unlikely that they wouldn’t have done it had they not seen this crappy video.

If any poorly thought out rant can land you in jail then, by the force of that precedent, descent won’t last long.
